Debra first joined DREAM in 2012 after graduating from the University of Massachusetts Amherst with a degree in Public Health Sciences. Originally a year-long volunteer, she began working with families through DREAM’s public library program. A few weeks after arriving, she discovered one of DREAM’s Montessori schools. The classroom she visited radiated peace and she was amazed by the independence and freedom observed in the children. The experience left her with a profound sense of wonderment, so she asked to volunteer with DREAM’s Montessori program. Her last months as an international volunteer were spent substitute teaching in DREAM’s lower elementary Montessori classroom. At the end of her volunteer year she returned to school to study education. In 2016 she graduated with a master’s in early childhood education and special education, with a specialization in Bilingual education from Columbia University. Afterwards, she taught dual-language ICT-Kindergarten at Dos Puentes Elementary School in Washington Heights. She is currently studying to receive her Montessori diploma in elementary through the Association of Montessori Mexico A.C. (AMMAC). She is passionate about working with children to develop independence, self-confidence, and critical thinking abilities. In her free time, she can be found with her family, reading, and traveling to different beaches in the Dominican Republic. She is looking forward to learning and growing alongside her DREAM family!
