Rethinking Service

by Nicki Fleischner

One, two, three, GO!”
The whistle blew and the first round of campers was off. Half-walking, half running, they carefully balanced a Ping-Pong ball atop a paddle in their hands, eyes glued down in concentration. From the sidelines teammates cheered. “Faster!” “Almost there!” Members of the “Yellow Fish” jumped up and down. The “Green Snakes” crouched in nervous excitement.

The Ping-Pong Relay was a familiar Color War event for the Camp Scatico Counselors in Training (CITs). Summer after summer, the group of boys and girls had participated in countless Color War relays and races, soccer matches, and softball games. Like campers throughout the United States, they shared the unique bond of growing up while spending seven weeks each summer at Rethinking Service… CLICK HERE TO READ MORE (PDF).

DREAM Continues to Grow Innovative Reading Campaign

For Immediate Release:

February 10, 2016

Cabarete, Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic- February 9th, 2016, The Dominican Republic Education and Mentoring (DREAM) Project is hosting its second annual My Very Own Library DREAM Book Fair in collaboration with Scholastic Book Fairs. This groundbreaking event is possible because of unprecedented support by the family and friends of My Very Own Library (MVOL) founder, Anne Feeley (1958-2012), the Bailey Tuvell Family and thousands of young, inspired Dominican readers.

Literacy is the cornerstone of a quality education and DREAM believes there is no better way to promote this than reading at home. A recent study of 70,000 students from 27 countries found, surprisingly, that having books in the home was a good predictor of children’s educational attainment. In fact, access to books was more predictive than the father’s occupation or family’s standard of living.

The second installment of the MVOL book fair will allow more than 2,000 students to select 4 free new Spanish Language books, to take home and add to their own DREAM home libraries. The event will be paired with motivational literacy activities, including a special visit and workshop by Dominican illustrator Emma Nice Grullon Balaguer.

In 2014-15, more than 2,000 students in 7 Public Schools and 5 DREAM Schools along the North Coast of the Dominican Republic participated in the fair. These young readers chose more than 20,000 books, who then created libraries in their own homes. This year, MVOL and DREAM will distribute 20,000 more books to our same network of readers. Allowing the participating students to choose their own books at the book fairs is a critical component of the program, based on research in the Kids & Family Reading Report™ from Scholastic, in which 90% of children ages 6-17 agreed that “I am more likely to finish a book I have picked out myself.”

The 2,000 students participating in this program have been selected from DREAM’s High quality Basic Education and Holistic Youth Development programs: Young Stars, DREAM Summer Schools and Camps, DREAM Con Libros (The DREAM Mobile Library Program) and The DREAM Public Library Program, in addition to eight area public schools. The goal of the DREAM Book Fairs is to improve literacy rates and ensure that all youth in the country have access to books and a brighter tomorrow, free from the cycle of poverty. DREAM strives to support and partner with the Dominican Ministry of Education, reversing the trend of low performing academic results and creating a shared culture of reading and high quality education. We have a beat and a tone in the way we breathe, when we laugh, when we cry, in our walk, when we make love, our pulse and our heartbeat. When I was producing international events for the Ministry of Sound I would travel all over the world and communicate with anyone through our shared passion for music. We didn’t need a common tongue to bond. So when the chance to spend the day witnessing…” Click here to read more.
