DREAM Publications

Our Solution

Student-authored books:

Access to reading materials improves reading outcomes and is conducive to educational attainment. Young and adult learners in the Dominican Republic do not have easy access to quality reading materials. Furthermore, materials that are available are not contextualized to life on the island. In 2014, author Ana Galán, with support from DREAM, decided to change this. She authored a book celebrating the importance of a culture of reading called Un Leon en Cabarete. Since then, DREAM, in collaboration with MLB Cares and the Dodgers, has sponsored a creative writing competition encouraging young authors to write their own stories. Winners’ stories are published and widely distributed in the country, and two books have been purchased by Scholastic. To date, six books have been published with many more on the way.

Mi Mundo magazine:

Mi Mundo is the community's first magazine written by, read and created for our community. Young local journalists work hard for months getting a real, hands-on experience that will help them in their future job search: using a laptop, learning how to ask questions and analyze and summarize information, improving their writing skills and, of course, having fun! Full of photographs and interesting articles, from music, sports and local plants, to interviews of community members and editorials about the issues that affect our youth, our free magazine is available to thousand families in the community and creates readers and writers of all ages.
